Description:

The Sainyabuli landrace is one of the most elusive highland Lao varieties, displaying robust sativa morphology with towering, narrow-leafed plants adapted to the mountainous terrain. Known by some as the "Sayaboury Madness," this accession is said to have an exceptionally strong, soaring high with a stimulating effect that can verge on overwhelming for those unfamiliar with traditional Southeast Asian ganja.

Aromatically, the landrace presents a rich complexity of floral and incense-like terpenes, with undertones of citrus and spice. Resin production is abundant, coating the loosely structured flowers in sticky trichomes.

Despite its reputation among those who have encountered it, cultivation appears to be rare and difficult to track down, with most cannabis from the region either disappearing into underground markets or no longer being grown in significant numbers.

Context:

Sainyabuli, or Sayaboury, sits in one of the most isolated and politically sensitive areas of Northern Laos, bordering Thailand. The province has long been a center for illicit activities, from illegal logging and wildlife trafficking to resource extraction controlled by powerful military and mafia elements.

Cannabis cultivation, once widespread, has been largely overshadowed by these industries, with enforcement and corruption making it difficult for traditional farmers to continue their work. Unlike other regions where landrace cannabis persists in pockets of remote villages, Sainyabuli's cannabis culture has been fragmented, and its genetic heritage is at risk of vanishing entirely.

Our sourcing efforts in 2023 were particularly challenging due to the deep secrecy surrounding cannabis cultivation in the region. After searching for an extended period, we secured seeds but had to leave quickly due to concerns about drawing attention. The fact that it took so long to find evidence of cultivation suggests severe suppression or a major decline in traditional growing practices.

Current Status:

  • Extremely difficult to locate – cultivation is either highly suppressed or has largely disappeared.

  • Mafia and military exploitation of resources dominate the region, leaving little room for traditional cannabis farming.

  • Very limited seed stock available – securing more would require further expeditions into an increasingly dangerous and controlled environment.

  • A preservation effort is urgently needed to safeguard the genetic legacy of this unique highland Lao landrace before it disappears entirely.
