Description:

Sourced from large batches of flowers arriving in Pakse from across Champasak Province and surrounding regions. This collection was acquired from a Lao broker handling significant quantities of local ganja, reflecting the traditional open-pollinated populations that once dominated the region.

Structurally, this accession resembles classic Mekhong Gold, with tall, elegant plants, long internodes, and delicate, resinous colas that develop a rich golden hue upon maturity. The terpene profile is spicy and woody, with hints of citrus, floral notes, and a deep, earthy sweetness.

The psychoactive effects are stimulating and euphoric, delivering a clear-headed, long-lasting high.

However, with rapid shifts in cultivation practices and economic pressures, this landrace is becoming increasingly difficult to source in its original form.

Context:

Pakse, the commercial hub of Southern Laos, has historically been an important center for cannabis trade, situated along the Mekong River, which has long served as a corridor for goods and agriculture moving between Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand.

For decades, cannabis from this region was cultivated in small-scale traditional farms, supplying local and regional demand while contributing to the legendary reputation of Lao ganja. These plants were favored for their complex aromas, potent effects, and smooth smoke, making them highly sought after by both local consumers and international travelers passing through the region.

However, as cannabis enforcement policies tightened in Laos, many farmers abandoned traditional open-pollinated cultivation in favor of more discreet operations or alternative crops. Today, what remains of Pakse’s cannabis heritage is increasingly fragmented, with landrace plants surviving in isolated pockets rather than in widespread fields.

Despite these challenges, the Mekhong landraces of Pakse retain significant cultural and genetic value, representing one of the last undisturbed expressions of Southern Lao cannabis history.

Current Status:

Limited seed stock remains, and Pakse landrace cultivation appears to be fading fast. Large-scale cultivation is no longer common, and with modern hybrids increasingly introduced into Laos, the long-term survival of this historic Mekhong cannabis variety is in question.

Without immediate conservation efforts, this landrace risks being lost, making the 2025 accessions a critical step toward preservation.

  • According to the Single Convention on Narcotic drugs signed in Vienna in 1961, the possession, importation and traffic of hemp seeds are not subject to regulation. This treaty expressly excludes cannabis seeds from the list of narcotic substances that are subject to international oversight. However, while the possession of hemp seeds is not a criminal offense in France, the cultivation of cannabis can result in administrative and penal sanctions as stipulated by Article 222-35 of the Penal Code.
