Description:

Punta Roja is one of the most revered Colombian landraces known all over the world for its soaring highs. Sourced by Lugo Mez in 2024, this accession represents an attempt to preserve the last remnants of a legendary landrace.

This highland-adapted NLD population produces towering plants, often exceeding 2-3 meters in height, with long internodal spacing and delicate, resin-coated flowers. As with many traditional Colombian cultivars, Punta Roja exhibits a long flowering time, requiring up to 24 weeks to reach full maturity.

Its aromatic profile is complex, featuring sweet citrus, earthy incense, and sandalwood notes, occasionally accompanied by hints of red berries and spice. Effects are described as euphoric, clear-headed, and long-lasting, characteristic of the classic South American sativa experience.

This accession comes at a critical moment—with hybrids now dominating cultivation in Colombia, only scattered patches of Punta Roja remain, grown by a handful of old-timers who still maintain the traditional genetics.

We released the seeds as an exclusive to our Patreon community, who are currently working to reproduce it. Hippie Cannabis Genetics is doing a large population reproduction as we speak!

Historical and Cultural Context:

Throughout the 1960s, 70s, and early 80s, Colombian strains like Punta Roja, Santa Marta Gold, and Mangobiche were among the most sought-after exports, fueling the global fascination with pure sativas.

The Calarcá region of Quindío was once a thriving cultivation zone, benefiting from its high-elevation terroir, which contributed to the slow-maturing, highly resinous flowers that made Colombian strains so legendary. However, by the mid-1980s, the rise of drug enforcement policies, crop eradication efforts, and the demand for faster-flowering hybrids led to the rapid decline of Punta Roja cultivation.

Today, very few traditional farmers continue growing these plants. Most cultivation has shifted to modern hybrids, which provide higher yields and shorter flowering times, but at the cost of losing the ancient genetics that once made Colombian landraces world-famous.

This accession represents one of the last efforts to document, preserve, and possibly restore this iconic lineage before it vanishes entirely.
